Transportation from port

Moving a Kei car

Kei cars aren’t built for sustained highway speeds, so be sure to transport yours from the port using a method, such as a flatbed or trailer, that keeps its wheels off the pavement, preventing them from spinning and potentially causing damage.

Towing

A 6' x 12' trailer should be able to haul most Kei vehicles.

Uhual provides a standard tow trailer that should fit this requirement

Ensure that you get the 6x12 utility trailer and not the 6x12 Utility Trailer Rental with Ramp. The trailer with the ramp has a narrower entrance and can potentially cause damage to the Kei when loading and unloading.

Also, ensure that the 6x12 utility trailer with no ramp has an open entrance. Some of the 6x12 utility trailers with no ramp have a narrow entrance like the trailer with the ramp.

Tiedowns

You will need a set of 4 tie-downs to secure the vehicle to the trailer. Since Kei cars weigh about 1500 pounds, this set of 4 tie-downs will be sufficient to secure the vehicle.

You can secure the car by putting the hooks through the holes on the rims and running the tie downs across the trailer

Jumper

Ensure you bring a jumper when picking up your car. Some ports will jump the car for you since the cars have been idle for a month, but if you stall your car, you won't be able to turn it back on.

Autotransport

If you’re unable to tow the vehicle yourself, consider hiring a professional auto transport service. Because Kei cars are uncommon in the U.S., be sure to provide their exact weight and dimensions when requesting a quote.

Autotransports are much more convenient than towing yourself, but have a higher cost. Most of the time, the convenience outweighs the cost of picking up the vehicle since most ports are only open on weekdays. Consider reaching out to a local Kei group to see if you can share a trailer with another person importing a vehicle.

Autotransport cost

The shipping company Montway Auto Transport describes the typical cost for auto transport.

Car shipping costs in 2025, specifically for open car shipping, are estimated around
$1.85/mile for short distances (1-500 miles) or $555 for a 300-mile trip. Medium distances
average about $.91/mile (500-1500 miles) or $910 for 1000 miles. Long distances
(1500+ miles) are about $.59/mile or $1,180 for a 2000-mile trip. It’s important to note that
car shipping costs may vary and the rates for enclosed car shipping will be higher.

Requirements for autotransport

You don’t need to be on-site when your vehicle is picked up. However, the transport company must have:

  • A copy of your Delivery Order
  • Clear instructions on where to collect the vehicle

Autotransport companies

There are two ways to find an auto transport company:

  1. Local Providers: Call businesses located near your entry port to compare rates and services.
  2. Online Aggregators: Use a freight-broker or auto-transport aggregator website to request multiple quotes at once, such as Uship or Shiply

By gathering several estimates and ensuring the carrier has your Delivery Order, you’ll streamline the shipping process and avoid any delays.
