Choosing a port
Most Kei car shipping companies will have a few select ports they ship to. Each port has different rules and requirements.
Generally, pick the closest port to your final destination.
Port requirements
Freetime
Freetime is much time given after notification of pickup. If the car stays at the port longer than the allotted free time, you will be charged demurrage and detention fees
Typically, it takes 2 business days after the drop-off date before the Kei car is ready for pickup. Call the port beforehand to ensure that the vehicle is ready for pickup.
TWIC
Ports may require a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or an escort. Some ports may not require a TWIC card, check the ports below accordingly to see if it is required.
If it is required and the Kei car is a one-time purchase, hiring an escort is recommended. If you plan on getting multiple Kei cars, you can get a TWIC card. It
TWIC card
The Transportation Worker Identification Credential, also known as TWIC®, is required by the Maritime Transportation Security Act for workers who need access to secure areas of the nation’s maritime facilities and vessels. TSA conducts a security threat assessment (background check) to determine a person’s eligibility and issues the credential.
To receive a TWIC card, complete an online application, schedule an appointment, and then visit a TWIC enrollment center. You'll provide necessary documentation, undergo fingerprinting, have your photo taken, and pay the non-refundable fee of $100. The whole process, including background checks and card production, can take 30-45 days

TWIC card
Escort
An escort is someone who can accompany you at the port if you don't have a TWIC card.
Escort services are provided at the port location, so there isn't a requirement to schedule an escort beforehand. Escorts can cost around $100.
Delivery order
All ports will require a delivery order. You can request one from the shipping company or your customs broker before going to the port.
